Orth To Start LSU Game

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Perry Orth will start for the Gamecocks at quarterback at LSU Saturday. Former Gamecock QB Stephen Garcia first reported the news Thursday for the website Saturday Down South. Steve Spurrier confirmed the news to The State newspaper. Orth, a redshirt junior, struggled in his only career start at Georgia and was replaced the next week by true freshman Lorenzo Nunez. Nunez, just the second true freshman QB to start for Spurrier, sprained his shoulder near the end of last Saturday’s 24-10 USC loss at Missouri. Because of the shoulder injury, Nunez has yet to take a snap in practice this week, but Spurrier told The State Thursday, “Lorenzo should be ready to do something, too,” Saturday at LSU. Nunez is the Gamecocks’ leading passer and rusher this season. He has completed 31 of 51 passes for 374 yards and has three touchdowns and three interceptions. Orth has 23 completions on 47 passing attempts this season for 283 yards and has one touchdown and two interceptions. Orth also has one rushing touchdown. Nunez has 45 carries for 299 rushing yards and one TD run. Brandon Wilds, USC’s second-leading rusher, is expected to return from a rib injury to play against LSU. Wilds, a senior and former Blythewood High School standout, has 35 carries for 182 rushing yards this season.
