Amos Leads USC at Tarheel Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Freshman Gaby Amos carded her first collegiate round under par (71, 1-under) on Sunday for the South Carolina women‘s golf team, which earned an 11th-place finish (40-over) at the Ruth‘s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The Gamecocks posted a 7-over (295) in the final round of three-day tournament. Amos, who finished in a tie for 64th with a final score of 16-over, saw a strong finish to her weekend after tallying four birdies. The Gainesville, Fla., native made the turn at 1-over after birdies on No. 13 and 18, and she posted an even (35) over her final nine holes. Amos was one of just 12 golfers to record a round under par on Sunday. Sarah Schmelzel fired a 3-over (75) in the final round, as she finished the tournament in a tie for 27th (7-over). The South Carolina senior, who totaled four birdies throughout the tournament, birdied No. 5 and ended her round even over her final five holes. A pair of Gamecocks, junior Katelyn Dambaugh and sophomore Ainhoe Olarra, both notched 39th-place finishes after recording overall scores of 10-over. Olarra turned in her best performance of the weekend on Sunday, carding a 1-over (73), while Dambaugh posted a 4-over (76). Freshman Isidora Nilsson fired a 5-over (77) in her final round and ended the tournament in a tie for 80th at 20-over. Duke earned first-place honors after boasting a total score of 3-over for the tournament. Arkansas (16-over) and Louisville (18-over) rounded out the top three, while Leona Maguire of the Blue Devils ended the week with the low individual score (4-under). UP NEXT The Gamecocks return to action on Friday, Oct. 23 at the Landfall Tradition for their final tournament of the fall season.
