Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — After more than a decade in garnet and black, Steve Spurrier’s resignation as head coach is one that caught Gamecock fans of all ages off guard. “When I heard I really didn’t quite believe it,” says Jalen Stein of Spurrier’s announcement. “I was definitely surprised,” says longtime Gamecock fan Casey Kahn. According to Louis Dessau the news is, “very surprising, very disappointing.” Maryam Tehranie echoes that opinion saying, “It’s very disappointing.” “I was mad, I was upset, I wanted him to finish the year at least,” explains Zachary Stein. The Head Ball Coach’s mid season departure is an added concern for fans already facing a losing record. According to Kahn, “We can either persevere and continue to play hard and give it our all or it could cause some turmoil.” “I hope it goes up from here but as of right now I don’t know what we’re going to be looking like,” says Stein. While doubts linger about the current season, many Gamecock’s remain optimistic about the team’s future. Saratt says, “We still do have the opportunity to regain and reconstruct our team.” According to Dessau, “The team has to continue building as it has. Every time we lose a coach the new one builds on what’s already been achieved.” “The new coach is going to lead us to success and do his very best job,” says Tehranie Even when looking ahead Gamecock fans say it’s impossible to forget the legacy left behind by the gamecock’s winningst coach. “Theres a lot of things that Spurrier did do for the team that was good and that we never thought could be done in such a short amount of time,” says Saratt According to Olin Jenkins, “I really think that they’ll remember HBC and just keep up the fight.”
