LEXINGTON, S.C. (WOLO) — Historic flooding displaced hundreds of people from their homes, but there are many animals who have yet to make it home. One Lexington kennel has devoted itself to taking dogs separated from their owners. “You know there’s a home out there for ’em somewhere and they don’t know what’s going on with ’em,” Pet-A-Coat Junction kennel worker Paige Nash says. Kennel manager Lindsay Collins says many of the dogs were found by people boating through the city, floating through the flood waters. “So we’ve been taking them in to try and find their homes,” Collins says, ” and if not, then we’re getting ’em all vetted up, and we’ll put them up for adoption, so they’ll have a good home eventually.” Collins says housing up to 30 dogs is expensive, but because of the support from the community, they’re okay. What they need most is money to pay for vet bills. Though, next week, one local vet has agreed to neuter all the dogs for free. Other vets have stepped-in to provide low-cost or free services. Community members are at the kennel every day, cleaning and taking the pups on walks. “We really appreciate the help and the dogs love the attention,” Nash says. The kennel has reunited six dogs with their families. They’re using social media to get the word out.
