Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — As recovery efforts continue across the Palmetto State, the American Red Cross is still lending a hand to some of the most devastated areas. “We still have people who don’t have a home,” said American Red Cross volunteer Dan Halyburton. At the St. Andrew’s Church shelter, Halyburton says more than 50 displaced residents remain. He says finding them a permanent place to stay is a top priority. “We have our case workers who are working with them and we are working with our community partners to make sure we get them a place to live,” said Halyburton. Aside from helping residents find a more permanent home, the American Red Cross is continuing to help with clean-up efforts, collecting supplies , and providing emotional support. “People are now starting to feel the emotional effects of a disaster like this,” said Halyburton. “It doesn‘t hit you right away but after you‘re in it awhile and you take that quiet moment, it hits you at the time you don‘t expect.” As people begin to plan for what‘s next, Halyburton says the Red Cross will have counselors on deck.
