Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — The South Carolina Department of Transportation is slowly opening more roads in the Palmetto State after hundreds were closed by this months historic rainfall. SCDOT’s Pete Poore said since the peak of the floods they’ve re-opened more than 60 percent of the state’s roads and bridges, including all major highways. However, in some of the hard-hit counties there is still work being done. One of those areas is Richland County. “We had about 130 closings, 60 of those areas were re-opened last week and we have about 77 that still need attention,” explained Poore. To fix the 70-plus roads and bridges that still need attention, Poore said dozens of crews are working around the clock to tackle several issues, including; washouts, sink holes, and collapsed or unsupported infrastructure. “What our crews are doing is basically just filling in the cracks, the huge crevices and then resurfacing them,” said Poore. SCDOT officials said the goal is to have a majority of the road problems fixed by Thanksgiving.
