SC trooper charged in shooting now facing shoplifting case
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A former South Carolina trooper charged with shooting an unarmed man has been accused of shoplifting.
Richland County deputies say 32-year-old Sean Groubert and his wife, 23-year-old Morgan Groubert, were arrested last month at a Walmart in Columbia. Authorities say they changed price tags on their merchandise and tried to leave without paying about $100 of what was owed.
Prosecutors are asking a judge to revoke Sean Groubert’s bond on a charge of aggravated assault and battery. Authorities released a video of him shooting Levar Jones just moments after Jones got out of his truck at a Columbia gas station last year.
Groubert was fired. Jones is recovering. South Carolina’s Insurance Reserve Fund has agreed to pay Jones $285,000.
Groubert’s attorney did not immediately return a message Monday.
