Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — According to officials with the March of Dimes, 1 in 9 South Carolina babies are born prematurely. This statistic earned the Palmetto State a “D” grade on the 2015 March of Dimes Premature Birth Report Card. At 10.8% South Carolina’s preterm birth rate leaves the state lagging behind the 9.6% National average according to the National Center for Health Statistics. Director of Program Services and Government Affairs for the March of Dimes, Breana Lipscomb says, “Unfortunately South Carolina continues to be one of the lowest ranking when it comes to disparities in birth outcomes and particularly preterm birth.” Richland and Lexington Counties are among those trailing behind the state’s average. Officials attribute the statewide low scores to gaps in premature birth rates between racial and ethnic groups. “African American that are born preterm is considerably higher than caucasian infants that are born preterm.” Even with the less than desirable grade, officials point out the numbers have been steadily improving something they attribute to the state’s participation in the birth’s outcomes initiative. Neonatologist Dr.ravi Rao says, “Basically looks at better prenatal care, things like centering pregnancy things like long term contraceptive use and to reduce C-Sections between the gestation of 34-38 weeks.” Despite preterm birth rates, data shows that South Carolina’s infant mortality rate has hit an all time low of 6.5 deaths per 1,000. According to Dr.Rao, “That is a reflection of better prenatal care and excellent neonatal care different units in South Carolina have been providing.” As officials continue work to improve infant mortality and premature birth rates in the Palmetto State, they ask parents to help by using proper prenatal care and spacing pregnancies appropriately. November is premature awareness month. For more tips on preventing preterm birth visit: MarchofDimes.org
