Orangeburg Sheriff warns motorists of rest-stop scam
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WOLO) — The Orangeburg County Sheriff‘s Office is warning motorists of scammers who prey on travelers at area rest stops. Officials say that an area pastor filed a report stating a group of males are running a scam in which the victim is told that money is being given away by an individual. The pastor said that on Nov. 4 he stopped at the I-26 eastbound rest area located near the 153 mile marker where one member of the scam team approached stating an individual had won the lottery and was giving away money, authorities say. Authorities say when the pastor pulled out a substantial amount of money, a man in the group grabbed the cash and the men then fled toward a brown motor home. Deputies warn that should anyone be approached by individuals claiming to be giving away money, call the OCSO immediately at 803-534-3550 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
