Officials working to ID man killed by train in Orangeburg

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — Police in Orangeburg are investigating after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a train.

Police tell local media outlets that the accident happened shortly after 10 p.m. Monday.

Orangeburg Public Safety Capt. Alfred Alexander tells The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg (http://bit.ly/1j71GoK) that the victim was a black male. Authorities are working to identify him.

Police say the train’s engineer told officers that he saw the man walking on the tracks, but couldn’t stop the train before striking him. Authorities say railroad warning lights and bells in the area were working properly.
