Claflin Women Edge Newberry

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (CU SID) — Jaquanna Davis free throw with three seconds proved to be the difference, as the Claflin University Lady Panthers defeated Newberry College 65-64 Wednesday night at the Tullis Arena. Davis, a red-shirted junior, was fouled while rebounding. She hit the first free throw but missed the second Davis‘ point gave the Lady Panthers their only lead of the game. Davis finished the game with 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Newberry rebounded the missed free throw and quickly called a time out. After he timeout, Newberry turned the ball over as Karima Jackson stole the inbound pass. Jackson finished the game with a good all-round performance of eight points and seven rebounds. Claflin was led in scoring by NaBresha Hughes. The red-shirted sophomore guard scored a team-high 14 points, all coming in the first half. It was Hughes that kept the Lady Panthers within striking distance in the period as Claflin trailed 38-35. Hughes hit four three-point baskets. Two other players scored in double figures as Shaniece Brown and Ashley Fields with 10 points each. Brown also dished out six assists. Newberry, now 2-1, was led by Meg Essex with a game-high 22 points. Nicola Hendreck and Samantha Creed added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Claflin ended the game with seven three-pointers to five for Newberry. The Lady Panthers won the battle on the boards against the much-taller Newberry team by a 44-33 margin. Claflin returns to action Saturday, hosting Allen University at the Tullis Arena for homecoming. The contest starts at 1:00 p.m.
