Night of drinking leads to shooting death in Columbia

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Richland County deputies say a man has been shot to death by an acquaintance while they were drinking in a Columbia home.

Sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson said the shooting happened at a home about a mile from Williams-Brice stadium around 2:45 a.m. Sunday.

Wilson says the victim was shot in the upper body and died at the hospital. His name has not been released.

Deputies say they found 54-year-old Melvin James White a short time later and arrested him. He is charged with murder. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.

Wilson says investigators are still trying to determine what led to the shooting.
