11 Inmates Charged with Rioting at Richland County Jail
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Authorities say 11 inmates have been charged with rioting after what deputies say was a gang fight at the Richland County jail.
Deputies said in a news release that the charges stem from a fight Oct. 24 at the jail where the inmates threw dinner trays and chairs and ignored commands to stop.
Authorities say no one was seriously injured.
Deputies say the fight and riot happened between rival gangs, and the 11 inmates arrested range in age from 19 to 26.
Under state law, an inmate convicted of participating in a riot in jail faces five to 10 years in prison.
Investigators say there could be more charges or arrests.
