Police Department Remembers Fallen Officer
Forest Acres, S.C. (WOLO) — For Kassy Alia there’s no better way to honor her husband than lending a helping hand to local law enforcement.
“He does represent all that is positive about law enforcement,” Kassy says of her late husband.
Officer Greg Alia was shot and killed while responding to a suspicious person’s call at the Richland Mall on September 30th.
Kassy tells ABC Columbia, “Greg was amazing. He loved his work. He was fair and just while at the same time being the life of the party… he just had the biggest heart.”
Since Alia’s death Kassy has been striving to shed light on the selflessness of law enforcement officers through the ‘Heroes in Blue’ initiative.
She explains, “He represents the strength and compassion that we see in 99.9% of law enforcement officers across the country.”
On the first Greg Alia day local Police officers were treated to hot meal or gift card paid for by resident donations. While the food is appreciated, officers say nothing means more than community support.
Forest Acres Police Chief Gene Sealy says, “We have 99% of people that they have your back all the time, so that’s what means a lot.”
Amidst growing tension between officers and the public Alia hopes to highlight the compassion of those who protect the community and play a special role in her life.
“They are my family now and I’m so proud of that,” says Kassy.
