Caitlyn Named People Magazine’s ‘Best Survival Story’ of 2015
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) — The accolades for the most beloved pitbull in the Lowcountry, if not the world, continue to come in. Caitlyn, the abused pit bull turned animal rights advocate, is being featured in People Magazine’s December issue.
Caitlyn was named the Best Survival Story of 2015 in the special Pet Awards section. The new issue hits news stands on Dec. 21.
We have received many emails and comments about how much she has been an inspiration for people in abusive situations and with scars,” the Charleston Animal Society said on a Facebook post Monday. “Her bravery in the face of such abuse and her beautiful scars have given many people hope for change in their own lives!”
Caitlyn, named by the Charleston Animal Society, attracted worldwide attention since she was discovered bleeding with her tongue sticking out in May.
“This was intentional,” said Dr. Kelli Klein of the harm done to Caitlyn. “Someone was trying to hurt her and they did it. They did what they went out to do. Just thankfully someone intervened so she didn’t die.”
Since Caitlyn’s story spread across the country, Toby’s Fund has seen an uptick in the number of donations, officials said, which is important because the Animal Society uses that money for medical treatments of abandoned and abused animals that come into its care.
The Charleston Animal Society was also voter Charleston Magazine’s Nonprofit of the Year for 2015, and Caitlyn’s Crew raised nearly $11,000 for Toby’s Fund during the annual chili cook-off.
The man accused of taping her muzzle closed, William Leonard Dodson, remains in the Charleston County jail. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
The Animal Society says they hope to see the case go to trial in 2016.
