Charleston Considers Another Memorial to Church Victims
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Charleston City Council is considering another memorial to the victims of the shootings at Emanuel AME Church.
The council takes up a resolution Tuesday night to dedicate 15 trees outside the city’s new Gaillard Center in memory of those who were killed and wounded during the shootings last June. The street in front of the church was earlier dedicated to the memory of the victims.
Nine black members of the church were killed and a white man, Dylann Roof, has been charged with murder in state court and numerous other counts, including hate crimes, in federal court.
The Gaillard Center includes a performing arts center and city offices and opened earlier this year. The $142 million facility is the most expensive municipal project in Charleston’s 345-year history.
