State Motto Will Appear on New SC License Plate
BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (WOLO) – The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin issuing a new South Carolina license plate and sticker during the next few months.
The new license plate reflects a strong South Carolina theme with the palmetto tree and crescent moon in indigo with a white background.
The state motto, “While I Breathe, I Hope,” is at the top of the license plate.
“The motto is significant for South Carolina. The state has proven its resilience this year and become the example for other states,” said Acting Executive Director John Laganelli.
DMV will start issuing the new license plates in early 2016. The new plates will have one validation sticker placement area instead of two, officials say.
The new stickers will have both the month and year, eliminating the need for a month sticker.
Officials say that wwitching to a single sticker process will mean a substantial cost savings for the state.
Customers who receive one of the new stickers for an older license plate with two sticker placement areas should place the new sticker on the right side of the plate.
The new stickers will alternate colors for each calendar year. The color change helps law enforcement determine the validity of a license plate from a distance.
South Carolina is not the first state to make this change to a single sticker. Florida, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, North Dakota and North Carolina have already switched to the single sticker vehicle registration process.
