Law Enforcement Officials Serve Homeless
State and Local Law Enforcement officials served the midlands homeless on Tuesday at Christ Central Ministries.
Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — On Tuesday, dozens of law enforcement officials served the midlands homeless at Christ Central Ministries on Main Street. In a busy kitchen, officials were busy cooking up a warm meal for hundreds of people in need.
“It’s just good to see them smile, a lot of them can’t go home so we welcome them,” said Christ Central Ministries Director Sylvia Mickens.
Christ Central Ministries has been serving warm meals to those in need for 19 years. However, this year for the holiday season, more than 2 dozen local and state law enforcement officials joined the effort to help make this Christmas meal special.
“They need to know that we’re people too, they need to know that we are here to support them, that when we show up it’s not always a bad thing,” said Richland County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Captain Chris Cowan.
“A lot of people who work at corrections are there because it’s a calling to help people and this is just an extension outside the Department of Corrections where our folks are here to help those in need,” said Director of the Department of Corrections, Bryan Sterling.
Officials served roughly 200 meals, with plates full of all the holiday fixings. For those in need, it was a meal made with love to lift their Christmas spirits.
“It helps pick up the peoples hearts to know that someone cares, that really means something to know that someone thought enough to fix up a table cloth, a good meal and give out gifts to walk away with, it means a lot,” said one resident in need.
