Flash Floods Across the Midlands During Heavy Rain

Heavy rain across the midlands creates flooding in Newberry County.

Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — On Wednesday, more wet weather dumped several inches of rain on the midlands and created flooding in Newberry County.

“We don’t know exactly how much rain we got but we got a lot of it in a relatively short period of time,” said Newberry Sheriff Lee Foster.
Sheriff Foster said over the course of the day Wednesday, the county had several flash floods. In a neighborhood along Scott’s Creek, firefighter crews blocked off roadways completely underwater. In that same area, crews helped voluntarily evacuate at least three residents.
“Fortunately, they weren’t in any grave danger but the concern was the water continuing to rise if we got anymore rain,” said Sheriff Foster.
With more rain in the forecast, officials are asking residents to use their best judgment.
“If you live along the creek or tributary, you need to be aware that the water is rising,” said Sheriff Foster. “The ground is completely saturated, it cannot handle anymore water as far as absorption so all it has is to run off. If you’re in a low lying area you need to be aware of that and you need to make a plan to be able to leave quickly before it gets up.”
For those driving in the wet weather, Sheriff Foster reminded motorists to turn around, don’t drown.
“More people are killed in conditions like this driving than they are in their homes because they don’t recognize the danger of the water pooling and standing in the roads,” said Sheriff Foster.
