Nonprofit provides wheels for those in need

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — For more than 32 years The Cooperative Ministry’s Autos for Opportunities program has been providing refurbished cars for the working poor in Richland County.

Executive Director Beth Irick says, “No transportation is a strong barrier, preventing people from living healthy sustainable lives. It’s a huge problem.”

Twenty-four year-old Jessica found herself homeless shortly after giving birth to her now 6 month old daughter.

“They said that my mom and dad’s home was unfit,” she tells ABC Columbia.

Now living at a shelter, with a part time job, Jessica is working towards becoming self sufficient. She explains that relying on others for transportation makes that task significantly more stressful.”

“In the beginning you have a lot of pride and you don’t want to look like you’re begging, or that you’re in a situation where you need a lot of help,” she says.

Lucky for Jessica, she’s next up on Autos for Opportunities 30 person long waiting list. The new set of wheels would move her one step closer to achieving the big things she has planned for herself and her daughter.

“I want to be a nurse, living on my own and taking care of her and just being stable. That’s what I’m working toward. I definitely don’t want her to end up in this situation.”

The Autos for Opportunities program is in dire need of vehicles. To make a donation visit www.coopmin.org or call (803)-799-3853 .
