Clemson Architecture Programs Locating in Old Factory

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson University has found a location to combine its architecture programs in Charleston – an old factory that once made cigars.

The university said in a news release that the Clemson Architecture Center and its Master of Science in Historic Preservation will move into leased space in the building called The Cigar Factory this summer.

The old factory near the Cooper River was built in 1881 and once was a textile mill. It has been renovated and now also houses small companies, retail space and restaurants.

The university says it will continue to look at finding a permanent home for its architecture programs in Charleston.

Two previous plans to build new architecture centers in downtown Charleston were withdrawn after public opposition to the contemporary design of the proposed buildings.
