Former Columbia City Councilman Resigns
Fmr. Columbia City Councilman Brian DeQuincey Newman resigns as Chairman of Central Midlands Board of Directors
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — A former Columbia City Councilman who was released on bond in early January for failing to file tax returns will no longer oversee Richland County’s penny tax funds.
Attorneys for Brian DeQuincey Newman said he will resign as Chairman of Central Midlands Board of Directors. The Board oversees the City bus system, and is funded through the Penny Tax program.
The South Carolina Supreme Court placed Newman’s law license on interim suspension, following his guilty plea to misdemeanor charges he failed to file tax returns in 2012 and 2013. A judge sentenced Newman to two years probation.
Newman maintains it was a simple oversight.
