Suspect in Texas Murder Killed in Shooting on Byron Road
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO/AP) — A suspect wanted in connection to a murder in Texas has died following an exchange of gunfire at an apartment complex near the VA hospital Monday.
Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said at a news conference that the suspect fired at police just before noon Monday, and the officers fired back at an apartment complex several miles east of downtown Columbia.
Officials say as members of US Marshals Task Force were attempting to arrest the suspect when the exchange of gunfire ensued.
No officers were injured, authorities say.
Richland County sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson says the suspect was working on his car when officers approached.
Deputies aren’t releasing his name or details about the murder charge until his family is notified.
Deputies are investigating the shootout because a violent-fugitive task force made up of Columbia police, federal agents and the State Law Enforcement Division was involved in the arrest.
