Texas Murder Suspect Killed in Gunfire Exchange
Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — A Houston Texas murder suspect is dead after a Monday afternoon shooting at Byron Road Apartments.
According to the Columbia Police Department, members of the U.S. Marshal task force were executing an arrest warrant when the suspect open fired at officers who then returned fire.
Lt. Curtis Wilson with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department says the task force received a tip placing the Houston murder suspect on the 300 block of Byron Road.
“When the U.S. Marshal as well as other as well as other law enforcement officers approached this is when the incident occurred,” says Lt. Wilson.
Those working nearby tell ABC Columbia, it was just after noon when they heard the loud noise.
“We heard two shots but it kind of sounded like the trash pickup people and when I came out here I heard four more shots and those were obvious shots,” says Rebekah Hickerson who was shaken and shocked by the incident.
“It’s pretty quiet. We don’t have a lot of problems,” she adds.
While no officers were injured in the confrontation, the suspect sustained at least one gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital where he died.
RCSD has taken over the investigation, and are looking into why the Texas suspect was in the Midlands.
