Watch: Lexington Student Honors Fallen Officers

Lexington County, S.C. (WOLO) — A cape filled with 100 heroes, one for each day of school.

“Police men that died. They are going out and just trying to find those bad guys,” says Braxton Redding, a first grader at Carolina Springs Elementary.

The simple project of making cape with 100 items is one Braxton quickly turned into a tribute for officers across the nation who lost their lives in the line of duty.

“They were just helping us live,” says the first grader.

A job Braxton has learned plenty about from his father. Sergeant Chad Redding, works with the Lexington Sheriff’s Department and is the mastermind behind the master piece.

Sgt. Redding explains, “We thought, super hero cape, you know what, lets put heroes on it.”

Those heroes consist of five fallen LCSD officers and the 95 most recently killed in the nation.  These include the familiar faces of Forest Acres Police Officer Greg Alia and Columbia Police Officer Stacy Case.

According to Braxton’s teacher Lory Barnett, “I’ve never had one as special as Braxton’s. It really took me back.”

The first grade teacher says his cape opened the door for an important classroom discussion.

She tells ABC Columbia, “It was symbolic of it being a superhero cape and the jobs that they do everyday and how they wake up in the morning and don’t even give it a second thought they just go out there and do what they need to do to help protect us.”

A message Sergeant Redding hopes will resonate with the class and his son.
“Children now a days just need tot know we’re out here to help. Yes bad things happen, we’re gonna respond and it might not be pretty or what they think but we’re friends”
