VIDEO: A Look at Bernie Sanders Campaign As He Stops in the Midlands
COLUMBIA , S.C. (WOLO) — This week, the ABC Columbia team is profiling each Democratic candidate ahead of Saturday’s primary.
In the most recent polls, presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders trails behind front-runner Hillary Clinton. However, at a press conference on Wednesday morning Sanders said he is not giving up the fight in the Palmetto State.
“I think we are going to pull off one of the great political upsets,” said Senator Sanders.
Despite lagging poll numbers in South Carolina, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said he is looking ahead to Super Tuesday, continuing his pursuit of the nation’s top job.
“We are in this race to win it,” said Sanders.
The self-proclaimed Democratic socialist is putting up a competitive fight against front-runner Hillary Clinton. Sanders won New Hampshire and narrowly finished second in Iowa and Nevada.
“She is not the inevitable candidate, I think we have a real shot,” said Sanders.
In South Carolina days before the primary, Sanders continued his fight for working families and stressed the need to tackle poverty by increasing the minimum wage and creating more jobs.
“In the richest country in the history of the world, we do not need to have children living in extreme poverty,” explained Sanders.
However, recently the Clinton campaign took aim at Sanders calling it a one-issue campaign. At Tuesday night’s Town Hall at USC’s Law School, Sanders and Clinton sparred over Sanders’ request for Clinton to release speech transcripts she made to Wall Street Banks.
“If everybody else does it and that includes the Republicans because we know they’ve made a lot of speeches,” said Clinton.
“Secretary Clinton said ‘I will do it if other people do it,’ well I am very happy to release all my paid speeches to Wall Street,” joked Sanders.
Sanders, in his 2nd term as a US Senator, said he respects Clinton but is still setting his sights on winning the nomination.
“We have waged a very, very vigorous campaign,” said Sanders. “We have picked up a lot of support and we have closed the gap very significantly.”
