bluffrdfatal.jpgLEXINGTON, S.C. (WOLO) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher says a Columbia couple was killed Sunday afternoon, when the motorcycle they were riding on collided with a minivan crossing Highway 6 in Lexington.

This happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Meadowfield Drive and Highway 6.

The coroner says Wayne E. Whitworth Jr., 43, was operating a 2002 Harley Davidson, and his wife, Kristie Ann Mason, 40, was a passenger. The bike was traveling south on Meadowfield Road when Whitworth failed to stop for a stop sign at Meadowfield Road and Hwy 6. The motorcycle was struck by a Chrysler minivan that was traveling west on Highway 6.

Officials say Whitworth and Mason were pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries they sustained in the accident. The driver and passengers of the van were not injured.

The couple was not wearing helmets when the collision occurred. Autopsies will be performed on Monday to determine the cause of the death.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol as well as the Lexington County Coroner’s Office is continuing to investigate this accident.
