Lexington Prosecutor Won’t Seek Re-Election After DUI Arrest
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A South Carolina prosecutor recently charged with his third-alcohol related offense is not seeking re-election.
Lexington County prosecutor Donnie Myers said in a news release Wednesday he will not run again for the office to which he was first elected in 1976. Myers’ current term expires in January and he reaches mandatory retirement in December of next year.
Officials including Gov. Nikki Haley have called on the 70-year-old Myers to resign after a driving under the influence arrest last month. Officers say his car crashed into a utility pole and video shows him struggling to complete sobriety tests.
Myers pleaded guilty to drunken driving in 2005 and served probation. He also paid a fine after being ticketed for an open container violation in 2012.
