COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — Will Muschamp and the new USC coaching staff hoped to narrow down its 5-man spring practice battle for the starting quarterback spot, but not like this.

According to multiple reports Monday, rising sophomore Lorenzo Nunez injured his knee at practice over the weekend and will likely miss the rest of spring practice.

Nunez led USC to a win against Central Florida in his first career start as a true freshman last season.  The Georgia native went on to start the next game at Missouri but was knocked because of injury.  Redshirt junior Perry Orth started at quarterback for Carolina the rest of the season that finished with a 3-9 record, USC’s worst since its winless season of 1999.

Orth, junior Connor Mitch who opened last season as the Gamecocks’ starting QB, sophomore Michael Scarnecchia and true freshman Brandon McIlwain are the other players vying to be Muschamp’s first USC starting quarterback.  Carolina returns to spring practice Tuesday.
