COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) -A Bluffton couple tied the note Monday night, thanks to the efforts of a wedding hospitality class at the University of South Carolina.
Henry Simmons, 30, married his girlfriend of a year-and-a-half, Lea Scavo, 24, in front of family, friends and some anxious USC students at the River Roads and Jasmine House and Gardens.
The 45 students, enrolled in the Wedding Planning and Management Class, have spent the past 35 days planning a dream wedding for the duo. They were chosen from a number of applicants, after the original winner decided not to move forward with the class.
Everything is donated from local vendors. The catch is, the couple has to let the students take control.
“It’s a class of mostly girls, so we all know how we would want our weddings to be,” USC senior Nichole Wegrzyniak said, “so we’re trying to make it as perfect as possible for her and her to-be husband.”
Giving up control was easy for the Simmons to do.
“At the end of the day, this is more than anything we could’ve done before, so it doesn’t matter what happens,” Lea said. “It’s just unbelievable.”
Lea and Henry got engaged last August. They planned a July wedding, but had to reassess their plans after Lea’s mother suffered a health setback that would require money budgeted for the wedding. Lea’s sister entered them in the USC Dream Wedding Contest.
The Simmons are from Bluffton. They both work in hospitality on Hilton Head Island. Lea is a graduate of the program that offers this class. Henry will enroll in Carolina in the fall to finish his Bachelor’s degree.
During the reception, students surprised the Simmons with a free honeymoon to Mexico.
In total, organizers said all the donations added up to more than $35,000 dollars.
