UPDATE: Body of Missing Boater Recovered from Lake Murray
LEXINGTON, S.C. (WOLO) – The Department of Natural Resources said they’ve recovered the body of a boater who went missing on Lake Murray yesterday.
Captain Robert McCullough tells ABC Columbia that the man was on a bass boat with a friend, when it capsized around 5 p.m. Saturday. Both tried to swim to shore, but got separated. The survivor made it to shore after one-and-half hours.
The Lexington County Coroner identified the victim as Jonathan Scruggs, 26, of Gaffney.
McCullough said high winds caused waves in the lake as high as eight feet tall.
Officials said the search started near Amick’s Ferry Road when the survivor made it to shore, and went late into the night, picking up again around 7:30 a.m. Sunday. A helicopter working as part of the search team spotted the victim’s body at Goat Island around 10 a.m.
We’re told the victim was wearing a life jacket. McCullough said the two boaters should’ve stayed with the boat instead of trying to get to shore.
