Watch: Boating Incidents Spur Safety Reminders

Columbia , S.C. (WOLO) — After several boating incidents in recent days, law enforcement officials are reminding boaters to be safe on the water this boating season.

“Be safe out on Lake Murray and be sure that you have the proper equipment so you and your family can be safe out on the lake,” said Deputy Derek Wilson.
Across the midlands this week, officials responded to at least two boating incidents, one on Lake Murray leaving one boater dead and a second in Sumter.  To prevent further incidents, officials are reminding boaters to prioritize safety by taking simple steps
“Some of the concerns I would probably press more of an issue with making sure that citizens that choose to boat on Lake Murray have the right amount of life vests on their vessels, also make sure they have the necessary whistles, make sure the horns work also make sure for toddlers that they have the adequate size to fit those toddlers,” explained Deputy Wilson.
Richland County Marine Patrol Deputy Wilson says it’s required boaters have enough life vests on their boat for the total number of people riding.
In addition, officials remind you to never consume alcohol while driving a boat and always carry a fully charged cell phone in case of an emergency.
