Four Gamecocks Earn All-SEC Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (USC SID) — Four members of the University of South Carolina Swimming & Diving team were named to the All-Southeastern Conference Swimming & Diving Team, the league office announced on Wednesday. Gamecocks Akaram MahmoudAllyson NiedTomas Peribonio and Nils Wich-Glasen each earned spots on the All-SEC Team.

Mahmoud is a First-Team All-SEC selection after winning the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle at the SEC Championships, held Feb. 16-20 in Columbia, Mo. The sophomore from Cairo, Egypt, became South Carolina’s first men’s SEC Champion since 2001 when he swam the race in 14:35.49. He also placed second at SECs in the men’s 500-yard freestyle, and he was runner-up in the 1650 at the NCAA Championships with a time of 14:31.66.

Nied earns a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team in addition to collecting Second-Team All-SEC laurels after finishing third in the platform dive at the conference meet with a school-record score of 283.80. The freshman went on to earn All-America honors in the event at the NCAA Championships.

Peribonio placed third at the SEC meet in the men’s 1650 free, swimming a time of 14:50.90 to land on the All-SEC Second Team. At the NCAA Championships, the sophomore earned All-America status in four different events, becoming the first Gamecock since 1990 to achieve the feat.

Wich-Glasen is a Second-Team All-SEC pick after finishing third in the men’s 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:53.94. He went on to earn All-America laurels in the 100-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Championships, posting a Gamecock-record time of 52.12 in prelims.

The South Carolina men finished seventh at the SEC Championships and 17th at NCAAs, the best result of the McGee Moody era. The Gamecock women placed 11th at the conference meet and 29th nationally. Both teams finished the year ranked in the top-25 of the College Swimming Coaches Association national poll, a program first.
