COLUMBIA, S.C. (Benedict SID) — The Benedict College football team showed improvements on the offensive side as the offense beat the defense 33-14 in the annual spring game on Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.
The offense scored one touchdown during the 48-play controlled scrimmage, a seven-yard pass from Mason Duckett to George Myers Jr. The offense also got a 42-yard field goal from Tory Mimbs. The offense also got points for first downs and big plays.
The defense, which got points for defensive stops, sacks and turnovers, picked up a four points on an interception by Stephen Williams off a tipped ball by Shaquille Husser.
“I thought the offense came out with a lot of fire and did some good things,” said head coach Mike White. “We probably had a penalty or two too much. I saw some good plays by our running game and that’s what I wanted to see. On the flip side, defensively we probably allowed too many big plays. That’s something we’ll work on.”
White complimented the three running backs who did the bulk of the carries – Raheem Jennings, Jeremy Johnson and Macathy Briere, as well as quarterbacks Mason Duckett and Charles Foster.
“Overall, the run game, we did some good things, which is an improvement from where we started,” White said. “I thought the quarterbacks made some good decisions. I thought Jennings, Johnson and Briere, all three running backs, did a pretty good job.”
The only touchdown of the day was a short pass from Duckett to Myers, who led the Tigers with 1,127 all-purpose yards last season.
“George is a guy who can play several different positions. He’ll be in those positions all year for us. He’s one of those guys who is a crowd pleaser and can make those exciting plays. I look to see a lot of that in 2016 by George.”
The Tigers open the 2016 season on Sept. 3 against Livingstone.
