WATCH: Newberry Co. Schools Superintendent Killed in Deputy-Involved Collision

NEWBERRY, S.C. (WOLO) – The superintendent of the Newberry County School District was killed in a collision involving a sheriff’s deputy Saturday night in front of Newberry High School.

The Newberry County coroner said that 56-year-old Bennie Bennett was killed. Bennett, from Prosperity, served as superintendent for a decade. He leaves behind a wife and two children.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said that Newberry County Sheriff’s deputy David Brandt was responding to a rollover on I-26 with the patrol car’s lights and sirens turned on. Brandt was headed north on S.C. 219/Main Street around 6:20 p.m. Saturday, when his patrol car collided with Bennett’s car, turning out onto the road after stopping at a stop sign. Authorities said Brandt was taken to Palmetto Health Richland with non-life threatening injuries. Sheriff Lee Foster said that Brandt returned home Sunday morning, where he’ll remain on medical leave.

Because a deputy was involved, the South Carolina Highway Patrol continues its investigation.
