Spearman Announces $770K in Summer Reading Camp Grants

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – The South Carolina Department of Education has announced that 14 school districts and organizations will receive $700,000 through the Summer Reading Camp Community Partnership Grant.

State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman said in a news release Monday that the grant is meant to expand existing summer reading camps that help stop summer reading loss.

The camps provide elementary school students who are significantly below grade-level reading proficiency with the opportunity to receive intensive instruction. Grant sites strategize ways to increase consistent student attendance.

Among the grant recipients are the Aiken County Public School District, the McCormick County School District and several others.
