Watch: Midlands Gives Kicks Off
Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — For 24 hours on Tuesday, the midlands community participated in Midlands Gives, a 24-hour online giving challenge.
“This is a community that is putting aside self for community,” said JoAnn Turnquist, The Central Carolina Community Foundation.
The event took place at the new Fireflies stadium, where dozens of non-profits filled the concourse hoping that together they can surpass last year’s total of $1.5 million raised and individually spread awareness about their organizations.
“I really feel like more and more we’ve gained a sense of community that we’re not competing for the same money that we can all work together to further our missions with the funds raised,” said Mary Lohman, Girls on the Run.
“Uur midlands community really cares about the good work the charities do and they are ready to help when we need it,” said Jennifer Rogers, PAALS
Local leaders also stepped up to the plate, each pitching for a specific cause.
“This is a chance for us all to chip in and make a difference in the lives of all our citizens,” explained Mayor Steve Benjamin.
Including the citizens devastated by October’s historic floods. One donor agreed to match one dollar to the One SC fund for every gift that is made during Midlands Gives and the money goes directly towards rebuilding destroyed homes.
“We still have more to be done we are asking for the people of South Carolina to donate,” said Governor Nikki Haley.
“If we want to get South Carolinians and specifically children back into their homes it takes your dollars,” added Director of Disaster Relief, Kevin Schwedo.
Due to severe issues with the national online giving platform, Midlands Gives will be extended until noon on Wednesday. In addition, the foundation has added a new link to make donations at www.YourFoundation.org.
