Fort Jackson Hosts SC Special Olympics
FORT JACKSON, S.C. (AP) _ Fort Jackson is hosting 1,400 athletes during a two-day celebration of the South Carolina Special Olympics.
At 6 p.m. Friday, a torch bearer begins running a 7-mile course from the South Carolina Statehouse in Columbia to Fort Jackson for the opening ceremonies. A parade of the athletes, cauldron lighting and musical entertainment follow at the Solomon Center.
On Saturday, competitions for aquatics, bocce, bowling, powerlifting and softball are held at Fort Jackson facilities. Badminton and track events are being held at Blythewood High School.
Award ceremonies are held throughout the day at each venue after competition is completed.
Closing ceremonies and a victory dance are being held at the Solomon Center at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
