WATCH: CFD Firefighter Okay After Injury During W. Columbia Blaze
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) — West Columbia fire officials are still working to determine what caused a two alarm fire at an apartment off Edgewater Lane.
Crews from West Columbia Fire Department received the call around 2:30 Monday morning. Crews from the Columbia Fire Department, Lexington Fire Department and Cayce Fire Department were called in to assist.
Officials say the fire appears to have started on a third floor balcony, before spreading to surrounding apartments. They are still investigating the cause of that fire.
Crews fought hot spots on the second and third floors of the apartment throughout the morning. Officials say there is extensive water damage to the first and second floors and that at least eight apartments are a total loss.
No residents were injured in the fire, but officials say one member of the Columbia Fire Department suffered minor injuries. According to authorities a portion of the ceiling collapsed on the firefighter while he was working to extinguish the fire. He was able to extract himself from the situation and walk out of the apartment on his own. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution and is expected to be okay.
The Red Cross is assisted 15 residents who were displaced during the blaze.
