Hootie & the Blowfish Among Recipients of Top SC Arts Award
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – One of South Carolina’s most recognizable native bands has received the state’s top art honor.
The members of Grammy Award-winning Hootie & the Blowfish received the 2016 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Awards for the Arts during a ceremony on Wednesday at the Statehouse.
The South Carolina Arts Commission Board says the Verner award is the highest honor the state presents in the arts. Established in 1972, the annual awards recognize outstanding achievement and contributions to the arts in South Carolina.
Other recipients of the honor this year include Columbia poet Nikky Finney, the City of Greenville and the Columbia Museum of Art.
