Fireflies Drop Series Finale at West Virginia, 3-0
CHARLESTON, WV (Fireflies) — The Fireflies were shut out on Sunday afternoon, dropping the series finale to the West Virginia Power, 3-0. For the first time in his professional career, P.J. Conlon was defeated. The lefty had won his last seven starts – the longest streak in Minor League Baseball this season.
West Virginia (26-23) plated all of its runs in the bottom of the fifth. Logan Ratledge and John Bormann singled to begin the frame and then two batters later, Tito Polo struck his sixth home run of the season over the left-field wall. Conlon showed his usual brilliance outside of that inning, allowing just five other hits and striking out four.
Columbia’s (25-25) offense mustered just three singles. J.C. Rodriguez and Kevin Kaczmarski both reached base twice, though.
Bret Helton (W, 2-4) had lost his last three starts for the Power, but picked up the victory on Sunday.
Seth Davis pitched nicely out of the bullpen, throwing two scoreless innings. The native of Colorado has a 2.63 ERA in 12 appearances this season.
The Fireflies continue their road trip on Monday when they visit State Mutual Stadium for a three-games series with the Rome Braves. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m., and manager Jose Leger hands the ball to right-hander Andrew Church (1-0, 0.00). He faces Rome southpaw Ricardo Sanchez (3-4, 5.23).
