Watch: Remembering the Emanuel Nine in the Midlands
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– A memorial service Friday at the College of Charleston TD Arena featured prayer, song, Governor Nikki Haley, and a message from President Barack Obama.
A presidential aide read a message from the president and the first lady. President Barack Obama said that the nation is deeply moved by what he calls “the boundless love and unshakable resilience” of the congregation of Emanuel AME Church, the scene of last year’s church shootings
The Midlands is also taking time to honor the Emanuel Nine, one year later.
There are also a number of events taking place in Columbia to mark the one year anniversary of the Charleston church shooting:

There are also a number of events taking place in Columbia to mark the one year anniversary of the Charleston church shooting:
- The South Carolina State Museum will be holding a Day of Remembrance on June 17.
- Hand Middle School will be holding a remembrance ceremony on June 17, starting at 8:45 p.m.
- There will be a Stop the Violence Rally on Saturday, June 18, at the South Carolina State House. Organizers say they hope it will raise awareness and prevent tragedies like the Charleston church shooting and the recent Orlando nightclub massacre. That starts at 10:00 a.m.
- The eBook We Are Charleston is now available for Richland Library customers to put on hold.
- The Columbia City Ballet is preparing to honor the Emanuel Nine through dance. They’ll be performing the ballet, “Emanuel Nine” during its 2017 season in an homage to the indomitable human spirit.
