Family escapes house fire in West Columbia
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO) – The Red Cross is providing assistance to a West Columbia family that lost its house in a fire today.
Authorities said the three adults and one child escaped the blaze at Indigo Place Court off Fish Hatchery Road.
The Red Cross is asking people to take two simple steps that can help save lives: check their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home. Every household shoulddevelop a fire escape plan and practice it several times a year and at different times of the day. Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Test them every month and replace the batteries when needed.
The American Red Cross, on average, responds to a home fire every four hours in South Carolina. To help neighbors affected by disasters become a Red Cross volunteer or make a financial contribution to Red Cross by calling 803-540-1200 or visiting www.redcross.org/SC.
