KNOXVILLE, T.N. (WOLO) — Former University of Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt has died at 64.

Summitt was the winningest coach in Division I college basketball history.   She led the Lady Vols to eight national championships.

Her son, Tyler Summitt, released a statement on his mother’s death.  It reads in part, “She died peacefully this morning at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most.”

Summitt announced back in 2011 that she was suffering from early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type.

According to the Pat Summitt Foundation, a private service and burial will be held in Middle Tennessee.   A public service to celebrate her life will take place at Thompson-Boling Arena, on the campus of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Details for the celebration of life will be released at a later date.
