SC School District Updates Cell Phone Policy

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – The Charleston County School Board has updated a district cellphone policy written years ago when there were few cellphones but many kids had pagers.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that middle and high school students in South Carolina’s second-largest district may now use phones and other mobile devices during lunch in the cafeteria. Elementary students can have phones but they must remain off and hidden through the day.
Teachers will no longer be allowed to confiscate cellphones on sight. The old policy said that parents or guardians could only retrieve confiscated phones at the end of the school year.
Under the new policy mobile devices may not be used to cheat on tests, violate the privacy of students or take photos on school property.
