Calhoun County Coroner Charged In Gun-Pointing Incident

handcuffs-22.jpgCOLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – State agents say they have arrested the Calhoun County coroner after he used his badge and gun to intimidate boaters racing on the Congaree River last year.

The State Law Enforcement Division said 61-year-old Donnie Porth isn’t licensed to carry a concealed weapon and the county has no policy about the coroner carrying a gun.

Agents say Porth agreed to confront the racing boaters in June 2015 after they came close to children. He had on a swimsuit, and attached his coroner’s badge to a T-shirt.

Authorities say the boaters tackled Porth, knocking the gun from his hand. Porth’s cousin fired a shot in the air as they struggled.

Porth is charged with misconduct in office and presenting a firearm, which is a felony. He didn’t return a message.
