Watch: Flood Recovery Continues, Nine Months Later
Columbia, S.C. (WOLO) — During a Thursday news conference, Governor Nikki Haley broke down October’s flood by the numbers.
She told reporters, “We lost 19 people. We had 36 dam failures. 137 million in damage to state owned roads. 741 million in housing losses.”
Now nine months removed from the historic rainfall the Governor said South Carolina’s situation is looking a little brighter thanks to the rapid response of Team S.C.
“When it happened we got out in it. When we saw a problems we went to the communities and had our South Carolina days. When we saw people not getting answers we got out one sc flood. We always made sure to counter act any problem we came in contact with,” she commended the team.
However, Haley did not deny that there are still many people in need due to the devastating damage.
The One SC Fund has helped rehab 1,100 homes and moving forward the focus will remain on accommodating the displaced.
Haley explained,”Our priorities are as long as someone is without a home we want to put them in it and so we want to make sure that we’re constantly working on this throughout the year to go forward.”
Roads also remain an issue, with 36 state roads still closed, two thirds of which are due to unstable dams.
“We’re not prepared to go in and rebuild a a private dam but we are prepared to go in if they elect to decommission it and reopen the roadway whatever it takes,” said DOT Secretary Christy Hall.
All off Team SC are committed to building back a stronger South Carolina where water exposed weaknesses.
“We should never forget that it happened, we should never forget that it can happen again and we should never forget all the occurred to make it better,” said Haley.
