Flag-Lowering Occasions in South Carolina in 2015
(AP) – On nearly 90 percent of days last year, one or more states were flying the American flag at half-staff to memorialize the deaths of military members, public officials, police, first responders, prominent citizens, and victims of mass killings and disasters, The Associated Press found in analyzing information requested from all 50 states and the federal government.
Instances of South Carolina ordering the flag flown at half-staff last year on at least some government property, separate from proclamations that came from the federal government:
Feb. 19: Sandy Springs firefighter Kenneth Stanton, hit by vehicle while on duty.
June 18-27: Charleston church shooting victims.
July 31: Columbia firefighter Tyron Weston, died July 26.
Aug. 4: Marlboro County Sheriff’s Deputy Delton Daniels, died of injuries from on-duty car crash.
Oct. 1: Burton firefighter Stuart Gregory Hardy, died after medical emergency while on duty.
Oct. 3: Forest Acres Police Officer Greg Alia, shot on duty.
Nov. 10: Columbia Police Officer Stacy Case, killed on duty.
