Victim Died of Hyperthermia, Coroner Says

wheelchair-death1.jpgRICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (PRESS RELEASE) – Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the man who died of heat related conditions in the early morning hours of July 6.

31-year-old Jamal Dirk Graham, was transported to Dorn VA Hospital ER on July 5 and died of hyperthermia.

Coroner Watts wants to inform the public of heat related illnesses and death due to the extreme weather conditions. The elderly, young and infirmed are most susceptible to the heat and those caring for such individuals should take steps to prevent any serious outcomes. Pet owners should take extra precautions during this time also.

Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke are the two major conditions of overheating and adequate steps should be taken to prevent either.

Heat Exhaustion
  • Heavy sweating
  • Weakness
  • Cold, pale, and clammy skin
  • Fast, weak pulse
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fainting
What You Should Do:
  • Move to a cooler location.
  • Lie down and loosen your clothing.
  • Apply cool, wet cloths to as much of your   body as possible.
  • Sip water.
  • If you have vomited and it continues, seek medical attention immediately.
Heat Stroke
  • High body temperature (above 103°F)*
  • Hot, red, dry or moist skin
  • Rapid and strong pulse
  • Possible unconsciousness
What You Should Do:
  • Call 911 immediately — this is a medical emergency.
  • Move the person to a cooler environment.
  • Reduce the person’s body temperature with cool cloths or even a bath.
  • Do NOT give fluids.
