Teen charged in string of break-ins in downtown Sumter

lexcarbreak.jpgSUMTER, S.C. (WOLO) – A 15-year-old has been arrested in a recent rash of break-ins of Broad Street businesses in downtown Sumter. Officials said the suspect smashed glass doors and windows to gain entry.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said it made the arrest late Friday night.

In addition to the break-ins, the juvenile had stolen a vehicle from one of the businesses this week. Late Friday, an investigator spotted the vehicle parked at a residence and was told that the juvenile had driven it there. When questioned, the juvenile had the vehicle keys in his pocket and he was taken into custody. The vehicle was released back to its owner.

After several hours of questioning, the juvenile confessed to several of the break-ins and named his co-defendants. The juvenile was transported to DJJ in Columbia.

Charges include theft of a motor vehicle and three counts of burglary. More could be forthcoming.

The investigation continues.
